Elizabeth “Liz” (Sims) Downey, 81, of Sioux Falls, S.D., formerly of Ohio, Ill., died Tuesday, Aug, 9, 2016 after a brief stay at Palisade Healthcare Center in Garretson, S.D.
Liz was born May 19, 1935 in Tiskilwa, Ill., to Paul and Agatha (Taylor) Sims. She married Joseph “Joe” Downey, of Ohio, on Nov. 27, 1954 at St. Mary’s Church in Tiskilwa. Joe preceded her in death in 2005. Liz and Joe were devoted to each other, their children, grandchildren, and extended families. Liz had a great heart and empathy for the handicapped and underdog. When she lived in Loves Park, Ill., she worked as a paraprofessional in a school for youth with disabilities. She later worked with the disabled at Gateway in Princeton, Ill. After they moved to the Downey family farm in Ohio, Liz and Joe were foster parents to a number of children in need of a stable, loving home. Liz also was a member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in Ohio where she was involved in the Ohio Council of Catholic Women.
Survivors include three daughters, Teresa (Gary) Gabriel of Brenham, Texas, Deborah (Patrick) Clark of Omaha, Neb., and Amy (Phil Gartner) Downey of Glenview; two sons, Larry (Carolyn) Downey of Kennesaw, Ga. and Paul (Therese) Downey of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five sisters, Jenirose (Donald) Houston of Tiskilwa, Mary Sims of Loves Park, Clara (George) Janet of The Villages, Fla; Cecelia Sims of Princeton and Carol (Mark) Albrecht of Ohio; three brothers, Cletus (Nancy) Sims of Tiskilwa, Frederick (Sharon) Sims of St. Charles and Edward (Mary Jo) Sims of Palatine; ten grandchildren, Dana (Jason) Smith, Erin Clark, Haley Clark, Katherine (Ryan) Gartin, Samantha Downey, Melissa Downey, Christopher Downey, Sean Downey, Anna Gartner and Abby Gartner; two great-grandchildren, Charlotte Smith and Adam Gartin; and many, many treasured nieces and nephews.
Liz was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and brother, Charles Sims (survived by wife, Phyllis).
Visitation will be 5-7 p.m., Mon, Aug. 15, 2016 at the Garland Funeral Home, Walnut, Ill., and 9 – 9:45 a.m., Tues., Aug. 16 at the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Ohio. Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church with Reverend Thomas Shaw officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Ohio. Immediately following the burial, please join Liz’s family for lunch at the church.
A memorial has been established to the Alzheimer’s Association.

Ohio, IL OHIO- Helen E. Cooney, 92, of Ohio, died Friday, August 5, 2016 at Heritage Healthcare in Walnut. Born July 22, 1924 in Ohio, she was a daughter of L.D. and Elizabeth (McCormick) Etheridge. She married Paul T. Cooney on September 3, 1945 in Jacksonville. He passed away on January 24, 2006. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ohio. Those left to honor her memory include her daughters, Carmel (Bill) Kuhlman and Paula Cooney both of Quincy; a son, Pat (Mary) Cooney of Ohio; 4 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, a son and 4 brothers. Visitation will be from 9:00-10:30 AM Thursday at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Ohio. Donald C. Rod - 8012/17/1935 - 8/2/2016
Donald Charles Rod, 80 of Amboy, passed away peacefully, Tuesday, August 2, 2016 surrounded by his family.
Donald was born December 17, 1935 in Charles Harris Hospital, Mendota, to Ross and Verna (Wendel) Rod, the youngest of four children. He grew up in Clarion Township and attended a one-room school. He graduated from Mendota High School in 1953 and joined the Illinois National Guard in 1958 in Ottawa and transferred to Sycamore for 6 years of service. He married Shirley M. Faber on September 22, 1957 at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church in La Moille. He was a lifelong farmer, starting in Clarion Township and then moving to East Grove Township in 1968 where he farmed the rest of his life. He was a member of the Ohio First Lutheran Church where he had served on the church council. He enjoyed helping people
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Shirley of Amboy; two daughters, Marilyn (Andy) Geiger of Sterling and Marcia (Robert) Hartwig of Princeton; two sons, Martin (Jeanette) Rod of Amboy and Mark Rod of La Moille; thirteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one brother, Ralph Rod of Princeton; one sister-in-law, Patricia Rod of Mendota and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one grandson, Eric Rod; two brothers, James and Alfred and two sisters-in-law, Pat Rod and Bobbie Rod.
Visitation will be Friday, August 5, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut and Saturday, August 6, 2016 from 9:00-10:00 A.M. at the Ohio First Lutheran Church. Funeral service will follow at 10:00 A.M. at the church with Reverend Gene Vincent officiating. Burial will follow at Van Orin Repose Cemetery in Van Orin, IL.

Gerald Patrick Dunn - 8511/21/1930 - 7/30/2016
Walnut, Illinois WALNUT - Gerald Patrick Dunn, 85 of Walnut and formerly of Harmon (Hamiton Twp), died Saturday July 30, 2016 at Heritage Manor Walnut. Gerald was born on November 13, 1930 at Angier Hospital in Sublette, IL the son of James J. and Genevieve (Fitzpatrick) Dunn. He was united in marriage to Anita Becker on August 31, 1963 in St. Patrick’s Church in Maytown. Gerald was a 4th generation Dunn to live and farm on the family owned Centenial farm in Hamilton Twp until his retirement. He lived his entire life in the same house, grain farming and raising livestock. He attended Daven school in East Grove Twp in Lee County and was a 1948 graduate of Amboy High School, where he served as president of his FFA class his senior year, and showing Duroc hogs and Hereford cattle at fairs. Gerald also held a pilot’s license for small planes. He had served in the 44th Infantry Division of the Illinois National Guard for 9 years. Gerald held various positions on the drainage district board for 44 years in Hamilton Twp. He was active in his church, St. John's Catholic Church, where he had served as a lector at Mass and was a member of the Knights of Columbus. He also was a member of the Senior Citizens of Walnut and Royal Neighbors of America. Those left to remember him are his wife, Anita; his son, Martin Dunn of Cape Coral, FL; his daughters: Patty (John) Schiera of Lake Thunderbird, Peggy (Gary - Poke) Clark of Princeton, IL and Kathy (Rob) Riley of Ohio, IL; 7 grandchildren; 2 step grandchildren; 1 step great grandson; his brother Robert Dunn of San Francisco, CA; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Sr. Elizabeth Dunn, Order of St. Benedict; and his brother James "Jay" Dunn. Visitation will be held on Wednesday August 3, 2016 from 4-7 PM at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut with the Rosary being recited at 3:30 PM. Visitation will also take place on Thursday from 9 - 9:45 AM at St. John's Catholic Church in Walnut. Followed by the Celebration of the Mass of Christian Burial at 10 AM in the Church with the Reverend Thomas Shaw, Pastor officiating. Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery in Ohio, IL. Ohio, IL Suzanne Dale Suzanne Dale, age 86 of Ohio, died Thursday, July 21, 2016 at Heritage Health in Walnut. Suzanne was born on May 9, 1930 in Walnut, the daughter of Harry and Dorothy (Williams) Andersen. She married Robert Dale on September 11, 1949 at the First Christian Church in Walnut. Suzanne worked for several years at Avanti Foods and later because of her love for reading, she worked as a librarian at the Ohio Public Library. One of Suzanne’s favorite things to do was to go dancing with her husband. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Walnut. Survivors include her husband of 66 years, Robert; one daughter, Barbara (Ronald) Von Holten of Walnut; four sons, James (Joyce) Dale of Amboy, William (Janelle) Dale of Geneseo, Joe (Chema) Dale of Arlington, VA and Thomas (Nancy) Dale of Geneseo; ten grandchildren, Matthew, Joelle, Michael, Timothy, Kimberly, Thomas, Ilyas, Dileyli, Dylan and Megan and thirteen great grandchildren, Joshua, Keiyana, Lia, Natasha, Samantha, Johnathon, Talon, Kaleah, Kaden, Huck, Sophia, Kayden and Jaron. She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Ronald Dale; one brother, Donald Andersen and one sister, Phyllis O’Dell. Visitation will be Sunday, July 24, 2016 from 3:00-6:00 P.M. at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut. Funeral service will be Monday, July 25, 2016 at 10:00 A.M. at the funeral home with Reverend Brian Moore, officiating. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery in Ohio. Walnut, IL Gordon Merle Dahl, age 88 of Walnut, died Wednesday, July 20, 2016. Gordon was born on April 6, 1928 in Greenville Township, the son of Merle and Anna (Renner) Dahl. He graduated from Walnut High School and attended Monmoth College. Gordon married Bette Bolbock on July 24, 1949 at the Red Oak Church. He was a lifelong farmer. Gordon was co-captain of the 1945 Walnut football team that was inducted into the Bureau County Hall of Fame for going undefeated and unscored upon. He was a member of the New Bedford Elite Softball team that traveled to two world championships. He had over fifty years of service to Greenville Township as trustee and road commissioner. Gordon was a member of the Red Oak Church. Survivors include his wife of 67 years, Bette; one daughter, Deborah (Eric) Forman of Dixon; three sons, Doug (Cindy) Dahl of Walnut, Dennis Dahl of Walnut and Darrell (Debra) Dahl of Walnut; one sister, Barbara (the late Robert) Draper of Ohio, IL; seven grandchildren, Katie Peterson, Kristin Bartels, Jamie Arellano, Brent Forman, Danae Arellano, Madalyn and Benjamin Dahl and four great-grandchildren, Ayla, Charlotte, Landon and Evelyn Arellano. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation will be Friday, July 22, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 P.M. at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut. Private graveside services will be held. MANLIUS- Ruby M. Hard, 98, died Wednesday, July 13, 2016 at Heritage Health in Walnut.
She was born on August 23, 1917 in Manlius, IL, the daughter of Harry L. and Anna (Anderson) Carlson. She married C. Edward Hard on July 13, 1940 in Davenport, IA. He preceded her in death. Ruby was a member of the Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church in Manlius.
Survivors include two sons: Ronald E. (Linda) Hard of Wyanett ant Myron (Barb) Hard of Princeton; three grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband and her brother Cecil “Cec” Carlson and her infant daughter, Elaine.
Graveside services will be held on Monday, July 18, 2016 at 10 AM at Manlius Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Arrangements by Garland Funeral Home in Walnut.
Memorials may be made in her memory to Heritage Health (Walnut Manor) or Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church.
Justin Hopson - 363/2/1980 - 7/8/2016
Justin John “Big Daddy” “Oger” Hopson, age 36 of Ohio, IL, passed away unexpectedly late Friday night, July 8, 2016, after being involved in a motorcycle accident. He was a beloved husband, father, son and friend to all. He was born March 2, 1980 in Madison, WI. He grew up most of his life in Clinton, IA, where he attended schools and later met his wife Eva Harboldt. They were married on November 18, 2006. They later moved and settled down with their family in Ohio, IL. Justin loved his family and friends very much. He was a friend to many. He loved to ride his motorcycle and was always going for rides with his wife. He had a passion for fishing that he has already passed on to his son. He spent time working on cars and was an animal lover with many different pets at home. He leaves behind his wife, Eva Hopson and three children, Alexis (14), Ijah (10) and Bentlee (6). He also leaves behind his mother, Dawn (William) Bailey of Fulton, IL and father, Brian K. Hopson of Maquoketa, IA. He had three sisters, Jennifer (Jacob) Luce of Maquoketa, IA, Jamie Cleaveland of Clinton, IA and Janelle Cleaveland of Mason City, IA. One step-sister, Mindy Scott of Clinton and two step-brothers, William Bailey, Jr and Christopher Bailey, both of Clinton, IA. He also leaves behind a grandfather, father-in-law, sister-in-law, aunts, uncles, cousins and several nieces and nephews. Justin had many friends that will also miss him. He was preceded in death by his grandma, Naomi (Allaback) Vest, grandparents, Connie and Barbara (LaRue) Hopson and his uncle, Doug Hopson. A gathering of family and friends will be held on Friday, July 15, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut, IL. Memorial service will be Saturday, July 16, 2016 at 1:00 P.M. at New Hope Church of the Nazarene in Princeton, IL with Pastor Laura Root-Tanner officiating.

Born August 15, 1923 in Princeton, she was a daughter of Frank and Jennie Anderson. She married Thomas R. Monier on June 6, 1948 in Princeton. He preceded her in death on May 13, 2012. Camilla was a member of Evangelical Covenant Church in Princeton. She enjoyed crossword puzzles and cross stitching and spending time with her grandchildren. Survivors include a daughter, Judy (Ron) Kaecker, of Ohio; three sons, Steven (Shellee) Monier, of Ohio, Gary (Nancy) Monier of Walnut and Donald Monier, of Walnut; a brother, Max (Joyce) Anderson, of Monmouth; a sister in law, Lucille Anderson, of Princeton; 14 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren. She also was preceded in death by her parents, a sister, five brothers and two great grandchildren. Visitation will be from 4-7 PM Sunday, July 10th and from 9:30-10:30 AM Monday at Evangelical Covenant Church in Princeton. Walnut, IL Eva Blanche Burkey, age 94, of Walnut, died Monday, July 4, 2016. Eva Blanche was born April 14, 1922 in Walnut the daughter of Wayne and Lola (Carey) Johnson. She married Philip A. Burkey on July 25, 1941 in Walnut. He preceded her in death on April 26, 2003. Eva Blanche was a homemaker and was a member of the Walnut United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School, attended Bible study classes and was an Amity Class member. She was an avid reader, quilter and was a member of Dodge Club and Good Morning Circle. She enjoyed traveling and loved spending time with her family. Survivors include one daughter, Lois Claire (David) Behrens of Walnut; one son, Bruce Alan (June) Burkey of Effingham; one son-in-law, Arlyn Loos of Polo; one sister, Carolyn (Howard) Anderson of Princeton; nine grandchildren, Brian, Jeff, Janell, Britt, Leigh, Neil, Brandon, Reid and Grant; and fourteen great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; and one daughter, Lyna Anne Loos. Visitation will be Thursday, July 7, 2016 from 9:00 – 10:45 AM at the Walnut United Methodist Church. Funeral services will be Thursday at 11:00 AM at the church with Reverend Mark Harkness officiating. Burial will be at Walnut Cemetery.
