John "Jack" Keleher - 86

11/12/1930 - 8/3/2017
Rock Falls, Illinois

John “Jack” William Keleher, of Rock Falls, was born in Sublette, IL on November 12, 1930 to John R. Keleher and Evelyn (Babe) Keleher, and grew up in Walnut, IL with sisters, Mary Ann (Gaunt-Rockford) and Linda (Carr-Walnut). He passed away at Morningside of Sterling on August 3rd, 2017 at the age of 86. He attended Walnut Schools and swerved in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a Flight Engineer and Mechanic on B-29 and B-47 bombers as a Technical Sergeant. Following his military service, Jack joined the Illinois State Police and served with distinction for 35 years-one of only two ISP troopers to serve for that length of time. He started as a road Trooper and worked his way up through the ranks in District 7 (Rock Island) and District 1 (Sterling), and finished as a Captain and District Commander in Rock Island. Following his retirement from the State Police in 1990, Jack served a number of years with the Whiteside County Sheriff’s Office in Court Security. Jack was married to Delora (Beaber) Keleher of  Rock Falls, for nearly 58 years, with two sons, Michael (Micheale) Keleher of Grayslake, IL and Daniel (Carole) Keleher of Somersworth, NH; grandchildren, Jackie Keleher of Galveston, TX, John Hein of Grayslake, IL and Jennifer Hein of Grayslake, IL and great grandson, Kearin Hein of Grayslake, IL.

Jack was an avid hunter and loved kids and dogs with equal vigor and held the coveted status of “Neighborhood Grandpa” of the Breezy Acres Subdivision through several generations of kids and neighbors. He could always be counted upon to lend a hand, pass out a kind word, a butter cookie or Milk Bone and pump up a bike tire to those in need. He served many years as a volunteer fireman with the Walnut Fire Department and was a life member of the Walnut First Christian Church.
