James Orville Mathew, age 87, of Walnut, IL left his home and his farm that he loved so well and journeyed into the arms of the Lord on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at CGH Medical Center in Sterling. Jim was born on April 26, 1929 in Sterling, IL the son of Orville and Edith (Grater) Mathew. He attended Round Grove Grade School and was a 1947 graduate of Morrison High School. He leaves his loving wife Ronette (Shawger) Mathew who he married on January 23, 1955 in Sterling. He served from 1951-1953 in the United States Army in the Military Police during the Korean War. He farmed in the Sterling area until moving to the Walnut farm in 1960. He was a landowner and a livestock and grain farmer. He served as director on the Bureau Township School Board, the Bureau County Livestock Feeders Board and the Bureau and Wyanet Mutual Insurance Company Board for many years. He was a charter member of the International Harvester Collectors Club, a charter member of the National Cattlemen's Association and a lifelong member at the Farm Bureau. He was a member of the Walnut United Methodist Church of Walnut, the American Legion Post #179 and a past member of the Sterling Moose Lodge #726. He enjoyed farming, traveling, was an avid Red Sox fan and had various hobbies. He had a loving family that meant more to him than anything in this world. In all his years he farmed with and owned International Harvester equipment. He is also survived by one daughter Nancy (Glenn) Austin of Ohio, IL; two sons Mark (Mary Lou) Mathew of LaHarpe, IL; Kent (Julie) Mathew of Walnut, IL; four granddaughters, Jennifer Jellerichs of Sterling, Lindsay (Jeff) DeBates of Princeton, IL, Mallorie (Jason) Miller of Peru, IL, Emily Mathew of Walnut, IL; three grandsons Matthew Junis of Champaign, IL, Taylor (Samantha) Mathew of Geneseo, Mitchell Mathew of LaHarpe, IL; four great granddaughters, Chloe Miller, Courtney and Charlotte Junis and Myla Miller; three great grandsons Jaydon Jellerichs, Elijah Junis and Blake Junis; another great grandchild due in April; two step grandsons J. C. and John Austin; three step great grandsons Austin, Brayden, Preston DeBates; one brother Gerald Mathew of Morrison, IL; one sister, Janet (Bill) Wantland of Seminole, Okla.; one brother in law Ronald Johnson of Sterling; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, a grandson Micah Mathew, one brother Hubert Mathew, two sisters Eleanor Schneider and Marjorie Johnson, one brother in law Charles Schneider and two sister in laws Pat and Mildred Mathew. Funeral services will be conducted on Saturday November 26, 2016 at 10 a.m. at the Walnut United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Harkness, pastor officiating. Burial will be in Walnut Cemetery with graveside military rites accorded by the Walnut American Legion Post #179. Visitation will be held on Friday November 25, 2016 from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Garland Funeral Home in Walnut. Lunch will be served at the Walnut United Methodist Church following the services on Saturday.
